Service Description: South Africa Mean Annual Runoff (mm per yr) used in WWF South Africa Journey of Water story map that can be found at http://panda.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=d26b65be62324d2e9d37005fd07e7667

Water doesn’t come from a tap, not even a dam.  If we as South Africans wish to meet our common aspirations of social and economic development, we will need to act decisively to prioritise the management of our water resources and the ecosystems that provide us with water. In terms of the supply of water, we will need to embrace the fundamental concept that water does not come from a tap, not even a dam; water is provided to us by healthy and functioning ecosystems.

A full report can be downloaded at http://www.journeyofwater.co.za/files/wwf_sa_watersource_area10_lo.pdf

Mean Annual Runoff data were acquired from SANBI Information Resources at http://bgis.sanbi.org/Projects/Detail/145

The Strategic Water Source Areas of South Africa were originally mapped by the National Freshwater Ecosystem Project, funded by the WRC, CSIR, SANBI, DWA and DEA. These maps were reviewed and refined by the CSIR through co-funding from a GEF-funded Project for Ecosystem Services (ProEcoServ) and WWF.
